Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions we quite often get asked when people are exploring becoming a volunteer. If there’s something we’ve not touched on then don’t hesitate to get in touch, just email info@qube-oca.org.uk or call 01691 656882.
Why volunteer?
People volunteer for many different reasons, but here are just some of the benefits of volunteering:
- Personal growth and fulfilment
- Skills development
- Social connection and networking
- Health benefits
- Increased empathy and perspective
How much time will I have to commit?
The good news is that volunteering fits around you. You choose how much time you give and when, alongside everything else in your life. Whether you want to start with just a couple of hours a week or prefer something you can do from home, we’re here to help you find what works best for you.
How will volunteering affect my benefits?
Volunteering is a great way to build new skills and gain hands-on experience that can support your career or help you move into work. It’s also a real plus on your CV, with many employers valuing volunteering highly. As a volunteer, you may also be able to access training and development opportunities.
In most cases, you can volunteer while claiming benefits, as long as you continue to meet your benefit conditions and only receive money to cover expenses, such as travel. To be on the safe side, it’s always best to check with your benefits advisor before starting any volunteering role.
Hear it from our volunteers!
“I feel that volunteering has helped me to preserve my skills and boost my self-confidence. But, it is more than just that for me. I have also gained new friends from partaking in this opportunity. The OCA team are great at ensuring the volunteers enjoy their roles and feel valued with their regular check ins with us, and for that I am grateful.”
Sue, Social Group Volunteer
“I approached OCA because I think they offer a really valuable service to people in the community who may be isolated or have difficulty getting to important appointments, through lack of public transport in their areas. The team are great and I’m really enjoying my volunteering experience.”
Darren, Community Transport Volunteer
VCST Partnership
OCA has supported local volunteering in Shropshire for many years. Working in partnership with the Voluntary and Community Support Team at Community Resource, this work has grown into a Shropshire wide offer that supports people and organisations to get involved in volunteering.
The team helps community groups, charities and organisations connect with local people who want to give their time and skills to support their communities. They also provide guidance and practical support to make volunteering positive, inclusive and rewarding for everyone involved.
There is a wide range of opportunities available across Shropshire, from one‑off activities to more regular roles. If you are interested in volunteering, you can get in touch to talk through what is available and explore options that fit your interests, skills and the time you have.
If you are thinking about volunteering or simply want to find out more about what it involves, please contact the Volunteer and VCS Infrastructure Officer, Alexandra Evans, at a.evans@qube-oca.org.uk.
